DeLorean 1/24 Scale - Gallery |
| Kit: | Ertl/MPC Back to the Future II |
| Pros: | My Favorite Car, most complex model I've ever built |
| Cons: | Almost overworked at this point, few minor technical errors |
| Verdict: | Display for life |

Well this is it, the end result of countless hours spread over about 12 years. There are some interesting things to note which can't be seen from the pictures. The torsion bars really work - they're made from spring steel from an old pool cleaning brush. The pistons are functional in that they move in and out but they are purely decorative. The latches on the doors actually click when you shut them. The gripping latch on the doors is in the front, and the side mirrors are actually screwed on for added strength. Each latch (about the size of a pencil eraser) has tiny springs and metal inside to grip the post. The hood latch has the same design. There are 4 real earbud speakers, 2 under the dash and 2 behind the seats. If you were 1/24 the size you are, they'd sound great. Behind the panel where the jack/toolkit usually is are the connections for all the front lightbulbs. I've had to solder in there one too many times. Enjoy the pics!
The frame is a separate model in itself. Aside from the wheels/tires and a few engine bits it's 100% scratch built, and even is filled with little bits of scrap metal to give it weight. The last two pics illustrate the working suspension. The only reference material I had for this was brochures and a few pics from magazines.

Finally here's some pics of the lights. The lights and stereo plug in under the driver's left rear quarterpanel. The plug is from an old walkman and connects to a custom-built box with a nice red button. This box also hooks up to the display case. The lights are controlled with a 8-pin DIP switch located in the passenger footwell behind the carpet. The headlights/sidemarkers/ambers/cluster lights are always on, while you can switch off the trunk, interior, door, backup, and engine bay lights. The door lights are actually one bulb in each door with fiberoptics to the front/back lights. I tried to get really tiny bulbs for the license plate lights but they never came in after being on backorder for like a year. All lights are powered by 1 C and 1 AA battery.
